Are you interested in training to work in nutrition and physical activity? There are a number of options in New Zealand ranging from workforce development courses to university degrees.

Nutrition and Physical Activity Training Options

Certificate of Achievement in Implementing HEHA Strategy

Manukau Institute of Technology (MIT) has developed two new courses aimed at preparing Māori and Pacific Community Health Workers to deliver HEHA initiatives in their respective communities. The courses will be available throughout New Zealand and are aimed at graduates of the MIT Certificate in Community Health Work and the Certificate in Pacific Community Health Work.

Diploma in Health Promotion

Manukau Institute of Technology (MIT), Department of Nursing and Health Studies is offering a new qualification – the Diploma in Health Promotion. This diploma is suitable for people currently working in the health promotion field who have not previously had the opportunity to gain a formal qualification or those seeking to enter the health promotion workforce.

Active Living and Easy Exercise Instructor Training

Netfit (formally Network for Fitness Professionals) provides a range of training options, including training to become an Active Living and Easy Exercise Instructor.

Te Whānau O Waipareira – 'Kai Oranga Tinana Mo Waipareira'

This unique trainee-centred 10 day course is designed to support positive messages surrounding kai, nutrition and physical activity. It is well-suited to Māori community workers promoting increased awareness of healthy lifestyles to whānau and hapu.

Training is delivered in West and South Auckland, and in the North Shore/Central region.

Te Hotu Manawa Māori – 'Kai Totika me Whakapakari Tinana

This 10 day nutrition and physical activity training is for Māori working with their communities to make a difference. Training is delivered in three to four different regions per year.

Certificate in Pacific Nutrition Course

Pacific Islands Heartbeat runs a 10 day train the trainer nutrition and physical activity course for Pacific people.

The Department of Applied Science, Auckland University of Technology offers a variety of Nutrition modules.

Australian Public Health Nutrition Academic Collaboration (APHNAC) – Virtual Faculty

APHNAC was established to increase the capacity of the academic sector to provide excellence in teaching and learning for public health nutrition. The 'virtual faculty' comprises eight academic institutions across Australia. Advanced training in public health nutrition is provided through existing public health degrees, non-award short courses and tailored training programmes.

Mauri Ora Associates

Mauri Ora Associates is a Māori-led clinical health consultancy based in Hamilton and Auckland. It runs a Certificate in Haoura Māori to increase competence in Te Reo Māori, develop knowledge and concepts of Māori health and extend skill bases in tikanga Māori within your practice.

Māori Health Community

This Māori-led organisation is supported by Māori health professional associations, Māori health providers and Māori health workers. The website profiles career development pathways for Māori and has information on available scholarships.

Health Promotion Forum

The Health Promotion Forum website features a training database that includes a variety of courses and training opportunities for health promotion workers.

Public Health Workforce Development

The Public Health Workforce Development site profiles careers, and training and workforce development options in public health.

Social Marketing Downunder

The professional development section of the Social Marketing Downunder website has links to courses and workshops in social marketing.
