Feeding our Futures

The Feeding our Futures campaign promotes the following messages:

  • Kids do better when they eat fruit and vegetables.
  • Make at least half your meal vegetables.
  • Snacks don't need to come in packets.
  • Kids eat better when they eat with you.
  • Eat together as a family.
  • Help your kids learn about food.
  • Make water or milk the first choice.

Produced by the Counties Manukau DHB Schools Accord, these guidelines give tips for setting up Breakfast Clubs in Schools.

The Heart Foundation has a range of resources to complement their School Food Programme and Healthy Heart Award for Schools.

How much Sugar is in Drinks?

Did you know that there are 20 teaspoons of sugar in a 600ml bottle of fizzy drink? Great for schools, this A2 poster shows just how much sugar is in common drinks. Posters cost $3.00 each and are available in English and Māori from Community and Public Health, Canterbury District Health Board.

What to drink?

This A4 poster was developed by nutrition and physical activity providers from across the South Island. It uses a traffic light system to explain what children can drink freely and what they should limit or avoid. The poster is based on the guidelines from the ANA Scientific Committee Report: Do sugary drinks contribute to obesity in children?.

Waitemata DHB Beverage Guidelines

The Waitemata DHB Beverage Guidelines for Schools are based on a simple traffic light system. Foods are labelled as either green, amber or red based on their energy, nutrient, and package sizes.

Food Challenge (Teaching Kit)

The Food Challenge Kit is a resource designed for primary school teachers to assist with the key areas of Food and Nutrition and Physical Activity in the NZ Curriculum. It was developed after requests from teachers for ideas on teaching nutrition to children. It is for years 3-5 (achievement level 2, strands A, C, and D) of the curriculum.

The kit is available for $34.95 + postage and packaging from Community and Public Health, Canterbury District Health Board.

What's for Lunch? (Teaching Kit)

This resource kit provides background information to support the pamphlet What's for Lunch? aimed at children age 4-8 years, which is also available from Community and Public Health. Information sheets cover food groups, the food pyramid, lunches, snacks, drinks, and advertising. There are also ideas for class games and activities.

The kit costs $10.00 + postage and packaging.

Healthy Start Flipchart and Storybook

This storybook style resource is available in A3 or A4 size and gives ideas for families/whānau on healthy eating. It covers: breakfast, lunches, snacks, treats, drinks, dinners, food labels, healthy teeth, and active movement.

Healthy Nibbles Newsletters for Schools

The Nutrition and Physical Activity Team at Community and Public Health, Christchurch write a newsletter once a month that delivers food and nutrition education to schools. Newsletters cover a range of topics such as:

  • What's for lunch? ideas
  • School fundraising – the healthy way
  • Snacks for healthy kids
  • Winter warming meals
  • Festive food and fun.

Healthy Lunches Made Easy is a visual resource produced by Community and Public Health, Christchurch that shows how to put together a child's lunch. It has great pictures and minimal wording.

Food and Nutrition Guidelines for Healthy Confident Kids

These guidelines were developed by the Ministry of Education and are supported by the Ministry of Health's Food and Beverage classification system. They also contribute to the Mission On campaign.
