ANA Scientific CommitteeThe Scientific Committee's goal is to provide New Zealand nutrition and physical activity practitioners with practical evidence summaries about issues of interest to ANA members. New research published by the Obesity Action Coalition and launched at ANA's Nutrition and Physical Activity Forum in Invercargill addresses how children's eating affects their school performance. The researchers found strong and consistent evidence that school attendance and classroom behaviour improve when undernourished children eat healthier food. New Zealand Research SitesPHI OnlinePHI Online is a tool for the visualisation of health and related information provided at district health board and local authority level. It includes data from the New Zealand Health Survey, hospitalisations and disease registrations, risk behaviour data and HEHA-related data. Ministry of Health Publications and Resources The reports below, and other Ministry of Health background papers, are all available from the Ministry of Health website, e.g. Food and Nutrition Guidelines for Adult New Zealanders.
This Ministry of Health website provides information about the policies, programmes and people addressing Māori Health. It has a comprehensive page of links to Māori health research sites. The Health Research Council is the major government funding agency in New Zealand responsible for purchasing and coordinating health research. This site includes reports and periodicals on a broad range of health research subjects including the reports from Māori Health researchers 'Hui Whakapiripiri'. The site also includes the Council's funding calendar, research guidelines, and a directory of New Zealand health researchers and funders. This site provides an overview of work by the Department of Human Nutrition, University of Otago. It includes a diabetes lifestyle intervention study and research into changing eating behaviours. Sport and Recreation New Zealand (SPARC) carries out and commissions research in the sport and active recreation sector to provide a strong base of evidence on which policy and programme development can be built. Australian Nutrition Advisory Council (ANAC) ANAC is a not-for-profit association convened by Sanitarium Health Food company. This site allows you to subscribe to regular email bulletins and download publications about food for cancer prevention. Alberta Centre for Active Living This website contains extensive Canadian and international resources related to physical activity. Topics include information about physical activity and various population groups (e.g. children, women, older adults and Aboriginal people), as well as resources on workplace health initiatives and population-health issues. The site also provides free quarterly research updates. This New Zealand site produces a monthly electronic journal, the Diabetes and Obesity Research Review, edited by Dr. Jeremy Krebs. The journal summarises studies from the previous month with comments from local experts. Subscription is free. Online Research Database LinksPubMed is a service of the National Library of Medicine in the United States. It provides access to over 12 million Medline citations. It also includes links to many sites providing full text articles. Vichealth in Australia hosts the Cochrane Health Promotion and Public Health Field. This is a great place to find public health research. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention This US site provides basic information about qualitative studies in nutrition, physical activity and related fields. Research about ANAA research paper about Agencies for Nutrition Action entitled, "Holding fast: the experience of collaboration in a competitive environment", written by Heather Fear and Pauline Barnett has recently been published in the journal Health Promotion International. The paper traces the early attempts of ANA members to develop collaborative efforts, such as joint campaigns, in the competitive health environment of the 1990s. Healthy Weight New Zealand Report 2001In 2001, ANA commissioned the Healthy Weight New Zealand Report 2001 to update scientific understanding of weight as an index of health and health risk. The primary author of this report is Gillian Tustin, with assistance from Sue Zimmerman.
