About Agencies for Nutrition Action (ANA)

Who We Are

Our Vision

A NATION THAT IS HEALTHY AND ACTIVE

Our vision will be realised when lives are not cut short, nor the quality of life diminished, by poor nutrition and inactivity.

Our Mission

A COMMON DIRECTION
A COMMON DESIRE

Agencies for Nutrition Action connects people, organisations and communities to the cause of improving nutrition and increasing physical activity. We provide leadership by linking people, organisations and communities to research, ideas, resources and knowledge.

The impact of our work together will be visible in:

  • inspiring the development, delivery and evaluation of policies and programmes which are based on evidence and best practice.
  • improving (or increasing) understanding and changing behaviour.
  • transforming the places where we live, learn, work and play into settings that support healthy eating and regular physical activity.

Our Values

We are committed to:

  • the health promotion and public health principles of the World Health Organization Charters on Health Promotion
  • the principles of the The Treaty of Waitangi
  • fostering relationships with relevant sectors especially those working in high need populations
  • fostering high quality staff through a learning environment
  • fostering trust and respect between ANA members
  • being a highly respected, responsive voice informed by knowledge-based research, development and 'best practice' related to nutrition and physical activity.

Funding

ANA is funded through member subscriptions. Specific ANA projects are funded through contracts from the Ministry of Health and the Health Sponsorship Council (HSC). ANA does not receive any funding from industry.

What We Do

One key objective is to promote consistent messages about the importance of healthy eating and physical activity for length and quality of life. Therefore ANA supports cooperation within the Nutrition and Physical Activity Sector through regional forums, a national conference, national fono, Asian forums, regular newsletters and this website. ANA advocates for a comprehensive environmental approach to prevent obesity and encourage healthy eating and physical activity.

In 2001 ANA produced the document Healthy Weight New Zealand to provide strategies for intervention.

Ethics of Association

While we support the establishment of like-minded associations, we recognise that our relationships can influence our activities, image and credibility.

Our Ethics of Association were written to guide how we associate with outside organisations.
